A pair of shoes is mechanism for departure from home. They are placed off to the side of the door, at the boundary between comfort and familiarity and the outer unknown. They are the sneakers we lace up for our morning jogs and the tall black pumps we slip on for our Saturday night parties. These shoes are made of wood and plastic, two contrasting materials. The wooden heel is reminiscent of a traditional sandal from Japan, whose culture includes the practice of taking off your shoes when you enter a domestic space. The wood is natural and eternal, like the atmosphere of home. The plastic band, on the other hand, evokes feelings of industrialism and the fast-paced ever-changing world around us. When the shoes are on, the plastic makes it appear as the owner isn’t even wearing shoes but rather has wooden heels attached to the soles of their feet.
